Manuals are one of the vital things of the IT field, the source of information about how to handle certain programs and problems. Surely they are not always top, but always better than nothing if you are able to read them. Sadly it got to be a common habit doing them in PDF format by now, which requires an external program for viewing – the Acrobat Reader, which does not automatically come with the operating system. Why the heck do they that to us?

Because it is a open, standardised format supported by opensource projects. HTML and good ol’ txt doesn’t have the same features like this publishing platform and the guys who do the writing stuff don’t want to do their work twice.
PS: My operating system of choice doesn’t come with an html capable browser – ASCII txt seems to be the only option. I think most people will not be happy with that option.
But feel free to use okular, kpdf, xpdf or sumatra pdf to only mention some open source viewers.

Printing, that’s why. I don’t know how often you print stuff, I almost never do. But that’s the justification for pdf. To be honest I’m not too bothered by manuals in pdf, I use okular a lot.

@Moshroum: The ideal combination is an operating system and its docs as pdf as Grazer says. It’s nothing about the viewers and stuff. It’s more or less the problem to read that all without a viewer – disregarding design.
@numerodix: In my case it’s the common problem to waste time installing the viewer as I hardly print stuff too.

Das trifft aber auch nur dann zu, wenn du Probs mit der Internetverbindung hast oder die Anleitung für deinen Pdf-Viewer lesen willst ;-)
Viel mehr stört mich die Installationsorgie wenn ich mir eine pps.-Datei* ansehen will!
*) Gedankenlos und massenhaft geschickt von Freunden die das Licht noch nicht erblickt haben :-(
