After five years of quite fine service, my Logitech MX310 mouse broke down. Personally, it’s a big loss, as we have had many lan parties together. As ranting doesn’t help, I was forced to go out to the shopping center for getting a new one. But as the MX310 isn’t produced anymore, I had to look for a different model.
As I’m using Logitech mice since I have started with computers, I won’t change that habit – you know: people using a Microsoft mouse on a linux box tend to eat children :)
At the store, a salesperson recommended me the new G5 mouse which – so he said – is the wet dream of all those gamers out there regarding resolution and so on. As I’m often working with graphical stuff, a higher resolution wasn’t a mistake at all – so I bought it and went home, trying to forget the salesperson’s babble.
Back home, I unpacked the mouse and raised one eyebrow as I discovered a metal box containing small weights for the mouse for being able to fine tune it. Fine tuning with weights? What for? I usually had that equipment with planes for making them fly. I guess I’ll figure that out sometime – but for now I have to work. So I’m connecting the mouse to my laptop, noticing that the mouse cable is made of some canvas which makes it a little more stiff, but much more resistant against the user. As a laptop traveler, this is more or less a welcome feature!
The next notable thing are the buttons which are part of the cover now, which prevents breakage too. I wouldn’t say it’s foolproof, but it’s a good and robust design.
Regarding usability, the mouse is sliding like it’s on an icy surface due to the ‘glide pads’ on the bottom, which reminds me of the old and rather cheap lightweight mice, which I always refused to use. So I checked with the kitchen scales: the old MX had 98g compared to 116g now. I’d say it’s the same weight class. I’m impressed by the progress Logitech made…

wobei ich schon vielfach auf recht unterhaltsame weise vorgeführt bekommen hab, wie sehr it-freaks mit alten gewohnheiten verbandelt sind und den trackman kilometerweise über den schreibtisch schubsen, ohne daß sich dabei der mauszeiger bewegt… *pruuuuuuuuust

Sowas soll’s geben – die ‘Dreck-Balls’, so wie solche Dinger bei uns aufgrund des immer wieder und sehr stark verschmutzten Kugeln genannt wird, sind durchaus ein nicht mehr allzu oft genutztes und somit angetroffenes Werkzeug…

dafür brauchst weniger platz am schreibtisch… und du weißt, wie mein schreibtisch aussieht…
und vor allem jetzt, mit mittlerweilen 5 M1’en, einem CT305 und dem sonstigen ProfiNet-Geraffel, wo ich nur mehr die tage zähle, bis die kollegen aus der IT-abteilung wieder mal habt-acht stehen… *grins

Aufräumen hilft immer wieder. Desweiteren ist der Platz den die Maus benötigt in den Pausen für den Kaffeebecher von Nutzen.

was tat dran weh??? auf den silberscheiben, die da gut rein passen, steht die kaffeetasse viel sicherer und meine schallplatte geht da sowieso nicht rein… immer noch besser, als wenn ich die kaffeetasse auf das nichtbenötigte tastenbrett vom schleppdepp stellen würd, weil da steht sie schief…
