KISS me

KISS is an acronym for Keep It Short and Simple. It is one of the basics in advertisment and design and most often disregarded to punch in new stuff. But do we really need it that way? I do not think that I’m the only person feeling that way. Let’s have a look at mobile phones: most phones include mp3 functionality, camera, radio and things I cannot even pronounce.

Ok, I own a nokia e61 and I am quite satisfied with it as long as it acts the way I want it to. But do we really need that stuff in there? Mobile TV? Do we really need a camera with some megapixel?

Convergence. Do we need 10 simple devices instead of 1 device which can do all.

  • Well… Fact is, that if this one device fails, you’ve pretty lost all the functionality packed into – including the 973 other features you do not need…

Well that’s a poor argument, if you have 10 devices you won’t carry them all on you, so you won’t use those features too.

Besides apart from breaking it, or running the battery dry, i never had any phones/camera/music player/pda fail on me yet (and there is always a nice handy reset button)

And battery is not even an issue here since having one set of battery/charger means your device will be charged properly and often.

Also a single device is bound to be less expensive (hardware/software reuse)

But i agree there is a usability issue, the same you will have on a Personal Computer but aggravated by the limited size of a handheld device.

  • Well multifunktionsthings are good if you need a feature but i things some features may be harmful, i would never use a wirelesslan if i dont have to use it.

You can play on you handy in the train instead of looking out of the windows and let you mind pausing, so after and after this behavior could be addictively there are enough people that must play on pc every free minute, i know that myself sometimes
