Dhclient, that bitch

July 28th, 2007 by Stargazer

Well. You are used to more beautiful words here, but that program caused some trouble in cooperation with the Networkmanager tool. The Story so far:

I am using Networkmanager to configure my network interfaces due to the work. I usually change my network at least three times a day. As WLAN and linux can be a pain, I am using the KNetworkManager tool, storing the keys in the KDE-Wallet. Everything is working, as long as you are using the dhcp package 3.0.6 or lower.

Kernel 2.6.22

July 10th, 2007 by Stargazer

There is great noise in the media since the new kernel has been released. The new features are told to be the killer. Well… amazing… but is the new kernel already useable? I had to face that question a few times today. The new wlan stack is causing headache to me as the old drivers for my ipw3945 would not work anymore – but there are already new ones available for the new stack: the iwlwifi drivers. To find out if those are working for me, I am just building the new kernel. The following options are required for wlan operation:

  • CONFIG_MAC80211
  • CONFIG_CFG80211
  • CONFIG_WLAN_80211

Problems so far:

  • The btrfs module refuses to load and complains about an incompatible module format, even if recompiled -> Solution: Boot the new kernel and recompile the module
  • No WLAN device -> Solution: flip that dammed RF kill switchto enable wlan

My Laptop here runs fine with the new kernel so far. Things that helped me here were google and the sunrise overlay of the gentoo community.

pfSense and the Captive Portal

May 14th, 2007 by Stargazer

What the hell am I talking about? Captive portals are authentication layers on firewalls. You have to enter your credentials before you can proceed connecting your web. They are mostly used at WLAN hotspots to do the billing.

WLAN Troubles

February 28th, 2007 by Stargazer

I am not sure how you are doing in your job… I just know, that I am not bored while doing network administration. The access point is located at 12 meters height, which should not be a problem at all.
